How to Develop an ‘Elevator Speech’

December 27, 2005

Much is said these days on the Net about ‘elevator speeches’. And frankly, I don’t see what all the fuss is. Don’t you simply get in an elevator and start talking to whomever will listen? Must this be an organized, written out speech you deliver?

There are those who would disagree, of course, saying that elevators are your place to make a good impression on unsuspecting listeners. But I say, relax. Go organic. Be yourself!

In fact, today I did an entire riff in a crowded elevator on the importance of Fecology. And I had a dozen rapt listeners as I went on about my work as the founder of the National Institute of Fecal Examiners. (I’m a certified colon cleanser from way back, and have put considerable time and energy into developing the field of Fecology.)

And I was glad I gave that speech. While many folks hurried away as soon as their floors arrived, and a few even got off early, one fellow approached me and thanked me for my insight. He is, of course, a fellow medical professional; a psychiatrist. He gave me his card and invited me to visit him at his office.

I’m planning to look into this valuable connection.
